  4. You can also stop and restart the app when using the HotSpots app.

Tips for safer internet via a WiFi HotSpot

KPN makes every effort to make our HotSpots as safe as possible. However, there are still risks. Because of the ease of use, KPN WiFi HotSpots are open WiFi networks. The following tips increase your safety:

  • Check whether you really log in to the KPN HotSpots portal by checking the address and the security certificate, by clicking on the ‘lock’ in the address bar. If the site does not have a valid security certificate, a warning will be displayed and no “lock” will appear.
  • An https site is secured and encrypts confidential data. Therefore, pay attention to the “s” in https.
  • Check if the redirect is to the correct web address (for example: www.kpn.com instead of www.kqn.com).
  • A VPN (virtual private network) can be set up for sites that cannot be reached with https. This is, as it were, a traffic tunnel. Traffic can (almost) not be read by any hackers, and can therefore be sent more securely. If a device has set up a VPN, an app will also send its traffic over it.
  • Regularly update the operating system (for example: the latest Android version) to get the latest version.
  • Firewall must be switched on and virus scanner active (for example: KPN Safe).

Llease note:

Logging in through the KPN HotSpots portal does not provide additional security for internet traffic after logging in.

What does KPN HotSpots do for safety?

KPN HotSpots traffic is handled differently compared to its own WiFi connection: public traffic is handled through a separate network. Furthermore, all actions on the portal (both logging in and paying) are https secured. People who are connected to the same HotSpots network cannot see each other. And incoming traffic to your device (initiated from the outside) is not allowed by KPN HotSpots. In addition, we regularly test the security of the portal.

  6. When the VPN is saved, choose the created VPN.
